King Edward's School Home

An independent day school for boys aged 11 to 18

Entry at 11+ and 13+

Examination:  Saturday 10 January 2015

Closing date for application:  Thursday 26 November 2014

The examination

The vast majority of boys enter the school at 11+, although there are a few places - on average between 3 and 5 - for entry at 13+. Each year, we have about 125 places available at 11+.

That examination consists of three elements, a one-hour paper in Mathematics, a one-hour paper in English and a one-hour paper in Verbal Reasoning. The Mathematics and English papers are set by the school specifically for the purpose. The Mathematics paper is in three sections, starting at quite an elementary level and becoming progressively more complex. The English paper has a comprehension and the opportunity for continuous writing.

The school report is also an integral part of the process of selection and the school gives considerable weight to a candidate's non-academic achievements and activities. A large number of interviews are also conducted of candidates for Assisted Places and Scholarships and of border-line candidates.

The process

The application pack for entry in September 2015 will be available on 1 July 2014. Please request a prospectus in the interim period.

To register your son please complete and return the Application Form after 1 July 2015.

On registration an advice sheet about the 11+/13+ examination will be supplied. Specimen papers are not available but there are some sample 11+ questions on the website.

For 11+ entry in September 2015 candidates should have been born between 1 September 2003 and 31 August 2004
For 13+ entry in September 2015 candidates should have been born between 1 September 2001 and 31 August 2002

Occasionally an application from a boy below the age limit may be accepted; in these cases, if a place is not offered, an application would not normally be accepted when he reaches the appropriate age. Boys who are above the age limit are only accepted for registration in exceptional circumstances.

Please contact Mrs Phillips, Director of Admissions, if your son is unable to sit the exam on the given date.
