What Sport Tells Us About Life

03 July 2009

The first week of term saw the visit of author, journalist and former England cricketer Ed Smith. Having retired from professional cricket last season, Ed is now writing full-time and pens a cerebral weekly sports column in the Telegraph entitled Mindgames. In a talk to the Divisions in General Studies about the themes from his latest book, the highly acclaimed \"What Sport Tells Us About Life\" (Penguin) Ed argued passionately for the value of participation in sport as a life lesson in enabling us to confront and deal with failure. He also spoke profoundly about true pleasure in life coming from total absorption in an activity, whether it be sport, music, reading or academic study. Ed was then kind enough to stay for a book signing in the Library where he also chatted widely with boys, offering advice about mental approaches to cricket and batting technique.
