King Edward's School Home

An independent day school for boys aged 11 to 18

We hold mathematics competitions for able mathematicians in:
For 2017-18 there is a slight change to the competition. The Year 4 competition is taking place in the autumn term (previously spring) and the Year 5 (previously Year 6) competition will take place in the spring term. Schools will compete for The Borcherds Shield named after former pupil and Fields Medal winning mathematician Richard Borcherds.

There are a still a few spaces left for the Year 4 competition. Please click on the link above and follow the instructions to do so. Thank you to all the schools that have entered so far.

Schools can now enter the Year 5 competition by clicking the link above.

Both competitions involve some challenging and fun maths which takes place within one afternoon, beginning at 1.30pm and finishing by 3pm. There are a series of heats followed by a final comprising all the schools who finished first their heat and possibly the best runners up. For more details please click on the links above or contact us.

The maths challenge increased our competitiveness in a sporting way. It challenged us to be better mathematicians. We were proud to represent our school and wanted to do our very best. It was a great experience of an interschool competition even if we hadn't won, but we did! Our friends back at school were very jealous that we had seen Kjartan Poskitt. Sometimes maths is seen as boring and muddling, but the author made it cool and fun for us.
