Butler, Leigh Streetley Latham

Private ▪ 1st Birmingham Pals, 14th Royal Warwickshire Regiment

Leigh Streetley Latham Butler, born on 26th September 1897, transferred to King Edward’s School from Handsworth Grammar School in January 1913. He was the youngest son of Edward, a commercial traveller, and Katie, of 82, Wellington Road, Handsworth. His brother Clifford, also an Old Edwardian, served in and survived the war. Leigh attended KES for less than a year, and nothing survives in the records that reveals why he left so early or what he went on to do.

Upon the outbreak of war, Leigh enlisted as a Private Soldier in the 1st Birmingham Pals Battalion (14th Royal Warwickshire Regiment), and was killed in action in 1916. He was only sixteen years of age when he enlisted, and eighteen when he died. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
