Lawrence, Randolph Russell

Second Lieutenant ▪ 8th Batt, The King’s Shropshire Light Inf.

Randolph Russell Lawrence, born in 1895, was admitted to King Edward’s School in 1909. He lived with his father, Francis John, manager of a jewellery firm, and his mother, Charlotte, at 207, Rotton Park Road, Edgbaston.

At School, Randolph excelled at science, placing second in his class at science in 1911.

In 1914, Randolph enlisted as a Private Soldier in the 1st Birmingham Pals Battalion (14th Royal Warwickshire Regiment), and, in January 1915, he was gazetted as a Second Lieutenant in the 8th Battalion, The King’s Shropshire Light Infantry. He was declared missing, presumed killed, on 24th August 1916 at Delville Wood on the Somme, aged twenty-one. He is commemorated on the Arras Memorial.
