Captain, 5th Battalion, North Staffordshire Regiment
Military Cross (July 5, 1918).
For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in superintending the defence of the sector held by his company during an enemy counter-attack. He visited the series of disconnected posts held by his company in broad daylight, and in full view of the enemy, who could be seen massing for attack, and under heavy fire. By his excellent behaviour and cheerfulness under fire he inspired all ranks with a determination to hold on.
