Mini Games is a hit with school kids

On Wednesday, 15 June 2022, King Edward’s School hosted six local primary schools in a mini ‘Commonwealth Games’ created and organised by several students in the Divisions as part of their IB CAS project.

Events were run by pupils and included; basketball, 60m sprint, football penalties, javelin, watt bike peak power test, shot put and the relay race. In each session the visiting children were taught the fundamentals of their sports before playing fun games and having a go at the scoring. Over 70 medals and many sweets were up for grabs over a variety of categories, from the furthest javelin thrown, to merit awards and fastest relay team.

Every school was given a Commonwealth country to represent along with an activity package containing puzzles, colouring-in and recipes. Schools were also encouraged to wear something with the national colour of their country; this led to a very colourful scene.

It was an extremely successful day, enjoyed by students and helpers alike. Not only did the children get to experience new and exciting sports in our wonderful facilities, but they had great fun whilst also learning about the Commonwealth Games and increasing the hype for an event which is now only days away.

Having succeeded in the competition, we were then given the opportunity to partake in an online Q&A session with the ESA astronaut Luca Parmitano, which was a very interesting and useful experience, where we learned a lot about life as an astronaut, especially what it is really like to spend time on the ISS.
