Psychology

Psychology is the scientific study of the human mind and behaviour: how we think, feel, act, relate to others, and how various internal and external factors influence us.

At KES, our Psychology department explores topics including mental illness, forensic behaviour, interpersonal relationships, cognitive processes and social influences.

Please note Psychology is only available to study at A Level.

Future careers

Beyond the classroom

In addition to our studies, pupils engage in a wide range of enrichment activities. These include participating in psychological research and experiments, attending lectures and workshops on topics such as forensic psychology and mental health. Pupils also explore real-world case studies, engage in debates and presentations, and regularly apply current research and examples to classroom discussions.

Meet the Head of Department

Miss Yasmin

Miss Yasmin is the Head of Psychology at King Edward’s School, Birmingham. She holds a Master’s degree in the Psychology of Education from the University of Manchester, where her research focused on student transitions from GCSE to A Level and their impact on wellbeing and attainment. Alongside her role at KES, she is also the Head of the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) across King Edward’s School and King Edward VI High School for Girls.

She is deeply committed to developing pupils’ critical thinking, analytical skills, and curiosity about human behaviour. Her teaching philosophy emphasises evidence-based practice, independent learning, and developing resilience. Miss Yasmin believes that Psychology enables pupils to better understand themselves and others, preparing them not only for further study but also for navigating an increasingly complex world.
