Exploring coastal and urban Geography

The 26 Divisions Geography pupils were delighted with the sight of Whitby in the sunshine and the background noise of the waves pounding against the seawall was a good setting to discuss the effectiveness of coastal management.

We were blessed with good weather and on the North Yorkshire coast. The 26 Divisions Geography pupils were delighted with the sight of Whitby in the sunshine and the background noise of the waves pounding against the seawall was a good setting to discuss the effectiveness of coastal management. We stayed in Grand Villa Heights Hotel overlooking Robin Hood’s Bay where the staff looked after us incredibly well. The boys who were fasting for Ramadan received a 4am breakfast delivery to their room courtesy of the hotel’s night manager.

Mr Smith led a fascinating tour of Middlesborough, to explore the city’s industrial heritage and the impacts of deindustrialisation on the community. We evaluated the many different regeneration initiatives including the new ‘Boho Zone’, a hub of high-tech industry, and considered whether Middlesborough’s CBD is ‘thriving or diving.’

On the final day, Mr Davies took us on a tour of the dramatic chalk cliffs of Flamborough Head in beautiful spring sunshine and we finished by visiting Mappleton, a village located on Europe’s fastest eroding coastline. The pupils on the trip were good humoured and studious; they engaged fantastically with the Geography work and returned to KES refreshed and invigorated.

The great Easter Debate: a sweet, chaotic showdown

If you were expecting a serious, well-structured debate at this year’s Easter debate, you were in for a surprise. What unfolded was less of a formal argument and more of a theatrical masterpiece – complete with flying chocolate, wild accusations and a speaker who somehow turned it into a human rights campaign for sugar.

Chimera Racing’s journey to the F1 in Schools National Finals

Managing all of this in just three weeks was no easy task – there were plenty of ups and downs, but the team’s dedication made it possible. The level of skill, commitment, and passion each person brought to their role made the challenge easier to handle, and seeing everything come together at nationals was a testament to the hard work and resilience of every team member.
