King Edward’s School continues to be named one of the UK’s top 100 senior schools for cricket by The Cricketer magazine. This is the second year in a row that KES has received this prestigious recognition; a testament to the school’s unwavering commitment to cricket and its outstanding coaching and facilities.
The Cricketer’s Schools Guide is a highly respected resource for parents and cricketing enthusiasts, providing a comprehensive overview of the best cricket programmes in schools across the UK.
Our inclusion in the guide is a result of our strong cricket programme. Cricket is the major summer sport at King Edward’s, with 11 teams from the 1st XI down to U12C level. The school’s facilities include an excellent 1st XI cricket ground at Eastern Road, three junior pitches on the school playing field, a four-lane all-weather net complex, top quality grass nets alongside the 1st XI pitch, plus a three-lane astroturf set of nets. The sports hall also provides four lanes of nets, and these nets are much used throughout the winter, during our extensive winter coaching programme (for all age groups). Our full-time cricket coach works with the boys throughout the year and also makes use of county players for additional coaching. Each year, we host visiting teams from overseas and in recent years our seniors have toured the West Indies and our juniors have regularly toured Dubai.

KES’s success in cricket is not just about winning matches. It is also about developing well-rounded individuals who are passionate about the game and committed to teamwork, sportsmanship, and personal growth. The school’s cricket programme provides students with the opportunity to make lifelong friendships, learn valuable life skills, and develop an enduring love for the sport.
A large number of our boys represent their counties at age-group level. Our facilities are used by Warwickshire County Cricket Club for age-group matches. The school has also staged an England Blind Team Test Match and it hosted cricket during the International Blind Sports Federation’s World Blind Games during the summer of 2023.
Notable cricketers to have attended KES include Bryan Lobb (Somerset), Ossie Wheatley (Warwickshire and Glamorgan), Alan Smith (Warwickshire and England), John Claughton (Warwickshire) who was Chief Master of King Edward’s from 2006-2016, Anurag Singh (Warwickshire, Worcestershire and Nottinghamshire), Mark Wagh (Warwickshire and Nottinghamshire) and Vikram Banerjee (Gloucestershire).
The 2024 Schools Guide is included alongside the December issue of The Cricketer (available on the newsstand from today). The guide will also be made available digitally on thecricketer.com from Friday 1 December.
