Students at King Edward’s School are celebrating after achieving outstanding results in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma.
The average score has risen to over 40 points (40.3) for the first time, seven points above the global average.
The maximum score of 45 points was gained by seven boys, Rohil Aurora, Louis Bowker, Mahmoud El Ashry, Pratyush Ghosh, Bavesh Jawahar, Michael Luo and Nithi Sendhil, a score normally achieved by less than 0.5% of students. A further 20 scored either 44 or 43 points and 62% of the cohort of 99 attained scores of 40 points or above.
Over three-quarters of the year group achieved grades of 7 or 6 in all three of their Higher Level subjects, the equivalent to three A*/A at A-level.
Dr Katy Ricks, Chief Master, said: “I am delighted for the class of 2021 and would like to congratulate the boys and their teachers on the outstanding results they have achieved.
“Despite the disruption experienced over the last year, our boys have shown great resilience and versatility – two of the many great qualities an IB education develops – in the way they have approached their studies. Not only have they achieved academic success that will propel them to the very best universities, but they have done so whilst contributing in so many ways to the life of the school and to supporting the local community.
“This personal growth is of as great an importance to our boys as academic success, developing the character traits needed for them to live, work and thrive in a rapidly changing world. The values and spirit of an IB education, which is also being embedded in the curriculum of younger years in the school, will enable these young men to make valuable contributions to society and I look forward to hearing about their achievements in the years ahead.”
Pratyush Ghosh, who achieved the maximum 45 points and will read French and Spanish at Brasenose College, Oxford, said: “I feel amazing – fulfilled, ecstatic, content! I’m looking forward to taking what I’ve learnt from the whole experience of IB into my university studies and can’t wait to get started.”
Rohil Aurora, who also achieved 45 points and will read philosophy and politics at Durham University, said: “I’m honestly quite surprised but I’m very happy. It feels like all the hard work has paid off!”
Michael Luo, who will read medicine at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, said: “I’m so overwhelmed that I got 45 points. I didn’t really know what to expect with everything that’s happened in the last year or so. I’m just really looking forward to starting my course now.”
The IB Diploma comprises six subjects, and all students take English, mathematics, at least one science, at least one language and at least one humanities subject. Students also complete an extended essay on any subject of their choice, follow a Theory of Knowledge course and undertake a range of co-curricular activity and community service.
The 2021 IB results in the UK were determined by a combination of coursework assessed by the International Baccalaureate Organisation and teacher-predicted grades.
