GCSE results 2020

a picture of the schools campus

Congratulations to our Fifths on their excellent GCSE results. This has been a challenging year, particularly for students who had been due to sit public examinations, and we are incredibly proud of how our students have adapted to the difficult circumstances.

Dr Katy Ricks, Chief Master of King Edward’s School, said: “I am delighted with the results our boys have achieved and am especially impressed with the resilience that they, and their teachers, have shown in this most challenging year.

“Although the boys, like all other Year 11 pupils nationally, have missed out on the experience of sitting their examinations, they have made full use of the time that was made available to them. They will begin their IB studies perhaps better prepared than any previous IB cohort because of their participation in independent study and engagement with the additional courses provided by teachers last term. They have gained significantly in knowledge and understanding from this period. Many have also taken the opportunity to support their local community whether through collecting for foodbanks, fundraising for numerous charities, or producing online materials to engage other young people while at home in lockdown.

“I would like to congratulate the Fifths of 2020 for all that they have achieved and look forward to seeing their development as they begin their IB Diploma studies in September, and indeed teaching some of them Standard Level English.”

Tolkien Lecture: Cricket as Business, Culture and Entertainment

On Tuesday 28 April, the Ruddock Performing Arts Centre was the venue for the second Tolkien Lecture since the series resumed following its pause due to the pandemic. It was a pleasure to continue this much anticipated programme of talks, named in honour of one of the most distinguished alumni of King Edward’s School, J. R. R. Tolkien.
