Two King Edward’s School debating teams have triumphed in recent competitions.

On Saturday 16 January, two Junior Debating teams comprising Year 10 pupils Rohan Galappathie, Safwan Sacranie, Ronav Jain and Alex Kalogrianitis, competed in the Oxford Union’s Regional Round of the International Competition for Young Debaters (ICYD), debating topics which included banning foreign aid charities from using overly sensational images of suffering.

Rohan, who ranked as the overall top individual speaker, and Safwan, who was awarded the joint second best speaker, will both go through to Finals Day on 1 May 2021.

Whilst the Senior Debating team, consisting of Year 12 students, Omar Amin and Advait Kuravi and School Captain, Jimmy Yuan, successfully made it through to the second round of the English-Speaking Union’s Schools’ Mace Debating Competition, which will take place later this spring.

Katharine Linehan, Teacher of English and Debating Coach, said: “I’m so proud of our debating teams who have all done extremely well to progress to the next rounds of their competitions. We’re looking forward to finding out the topics for the next rounds!”
