Double success for IB economists

Two King Edward’s School International Baccalaureate (IB) economics students have enjoyed success in recent competitions.

Earlier this month Year 12 student Prathamesh Paruvatharaj was awarded runner-up in the Minds Underground Economics 2021 Essay Competition.

Over 1,000 entrants from across the world entered this year’s Minds Underground Essay Competitions which provides students with an opportunity to engage in university-level research, hone their writing skills and draw links between economic concepts and real-world scenarios.

Prathamesh secured second place in the economics category by impressing the judges with his essay on ‘Is austerity ever necessary?’

At the end March, Nikash Chekuri in Year 12 was announced as one of three winners in the Financial Times (FT) Student Advocate Competition. Via video, Nikash outlined a business plan on how to change the perception of the Financial Times as a finance-only newspaper by showcasing the FT’s broad range of journalism. The judges praised the coherence and viability of ideas, and the quality of thought that went into his presentation.

Ron Turford, Head of Economics and Business Management, said: “It is fantastic to see our students being recognised in such impressive competitions. A huge well done to Prathamesh and Nikash on their success – they should be very proud of themselves.”
