House Art Competition

art competition visual

This week saw the launch of a new House Art Competition.

The theme is to celebrate the co-curricular life of the school that gives all of us in the KES community so much pleasure and enjoyment. How can you portray and encapsulate that joy in a piece of artwork? Would a literal life-like pencil portrayal of a dirty bicycle capture the rewarding hours spent getting it covered in mud? Would a more abstract colourful piece capture the essence of the feeling of sledging, or the smell of a freshly baked cake?!

Whatever your co-curricular life, now is the time to try to commit its essence – and your pleasure – to paper. As either painting, drawing or mixed media, create a piece of art with the title “Life Beyond the Classroom”. Submissions should be to your House Master by Monday 1 March.

Dawn Poole, one of our terrific art teachers, who had the idea for the competition said: “Lockdown can offer everyone a chance to unlock their inner artist. I can’t wait to see how the KES boys express themselves through art. Grayson Perry from Channel 4’s Art Club says ‘The people who get the most out of the arts are the ones who make them.’ So start making art!”

There are competitions for the Minors (Shells and Removes) and Juniors (Upper Middles and Fourths). Obviously the big prize is the glory of your House in the Cock House competition, but we’ll also be looking to display the winning pieces on the website and, ultimately, on the corridors at school.

Having succeeded in the competition, we were then given the opportunity to partake in an online Q&A session with the ESA astronaut Luca Parmitano, which was a very interesting and useful experience, where we learned a lot about life as an astronaut, especially what it is really like to spend time on the ISS.
