A Card From King Charles III

a picture of a student receiving a letter from the king

We are proud to share the heartwarming story of Harman (Fourths), who recently received a touching response from King Charles III after sending him a poem he had written in memory of his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II. Harman shares his experience and the personal card he received from the King.

On 8 September 2022, we received the sad news of the passing of Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth II, after more than 70 years of service. I was inspired to pen a poem about her amazing life, which I sent by post to Buckingham Palace on behalf of King Edward’s School.

Queen Elizabeth II
Her unfailing sense of duty,
Her 70 year reign.
Her presence, the only constant,
Through times of happiness and pain.

Her charming sense of humour,
Her etiquette and grace.
Her husband, Prince Philip,
Her foundation and her base.

Her unfaltering sense of purpose,
Her steadfastness and dedication.
Her faultless, trademark style;
A symbol of our nation.

Her wise, loving smile,
What a pioneering leader she has been!
We salute her one last time,
Elizabeth II, our Queen.

In April 2023, I received a letter with the address of Buckingham Palace and King Charles’ new cypher on it! I was very excited and after opening the envelope with much care, I was delighted to find a card from King Charles III inside! On the inside cover there was a photograph of a young Queen Elizabeth with King Charles as a boy. I thought that this was a beautiful, personal touch. Opposite this were the following words written by the King: “It was so very kind of you to send me such a wonderfully generous message following the death of my beloved mother. Your most thoughtful words are enormously comforting, and I cannot tell you how deeply they are appreciated at this time of immense sorrow.”

I will cherish this card forever and I felt honoured to pay our respects to the Royal family on behalf of King Edwards’s School.
