CAS during lockdown

a picture of a drum set

Our students have had to adapt to lockdown life rather suddenly and are navigating a great deal of challenges that come with remote learning. Nevertheless, their capacity to innovate has been staggering in just a few short weeks and it has quickly become clear that many of the finest solutions to the new challenges we face are coming from our students. As a result, students have been asked to apply their creative talents and ingenuity to the service of the local community in time made available during their timetable.

Our students have made tremendous use of this time, helping their families, their neighbours, our nation’s NHS and even some international causes. It is the intention of this newsletter to celebrate the accomplishments of our students in the area of service and it is my sincere hope that you enjoy reading about the vast array of contributions made in the coming weeks. In this week’s newsletter Ronav Jain, Aran Bansal and Owen Swanborough share some of their contributions. I would urge all students, and indeed parents, to read the school’s Service Booklet which can be found on Firefly and is updated weekly in an effort to keep up with student inventiveness. Inside you will find numerous activities that will provide a service to the community whilst also matching student interests and hobbies.

We are proud of the effort of all of our students during this period, from the student cooking a meal for his parents to those writing letters of thanks to our NHS workers. We thank the students that are collecting food locally for foodbanks and those organising and participating in the charity fundraisers that are ongoing. KES has supported the communities of Birmingham for nearly 470 years and in the face of the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic our students continue to make a telling contribution.
