King Edward’s School, Birmingham has been shortlisted for two awards in the Independent School Awards 2013.
The school’s outreach programme has been shortlisted in the ‘Best Independent-Maintained School Collaboration’ category, and the school’s switch from A-level to the International Baccalaureate Diploma in 2010 is up for the ‘Education Initiative of the Year’.
John Claughton, the Chief Master of King Edward’s School who was also recently announced as a runner up in the Tatler School Awards for the Best Head of Public School, said: “We are delighted to be shortlisted in two categories for these prestigious awards, especially after winning an award two years ago for our success in fundraising.
“The two awards reflect two different aspects of school life. The collaboration with state schools reflects our deep commitment to the local community: we are keen for every bright boy to think that he could come to King Edward’s. So, we have worked hard in recent times to develop our Outreach programme so that in the last academic year 7,000 primary school children from 78 schools have been involved with us. Activities range from academic subjects to sport, music and drama, and even historical re-enactment.
“As an education initiative, the decision to move completely to the International Baccalaureate Diploma from A-levels in September 2010 was very brave. We did it because it provides a really challenging, rigorous and broad education. Now, three years on, we can see that this change has not only brought outstanding results – 21 boys gained entry to Oxford and Cambridge this year – but has restored the intellectual life of this school.”
The Independent School Awards celebrate excellence in the strategic and financial management of independent schools in the UK. The awards ceremony will take place on Thursday, 14 November 2013 at the Nottingham Belfry when the winners will be announced.
