Teachers spoke to their classes about the transformative power of reading, and the pupils were are very engaged and asked some great questions. The library displayed the books the teachers had chosen so boys could take them out to read either now or over summer. There was also a book swap and a book fair for everyone to browse to update their own collections.
In the Greek Theatre a range of readings took place, from Tolstoy’s ‘The two brothers and the gold’ to Shakespeare’s Hamlet, with an especially noteworthy impromptu performance of Richard II from Dr Miles, Miss Falkner and Mrs Stokes! There was a good-sized crowd both listening and participating at every break and lunch and it was a real treat to see so many pupils sharing their reading in such a lovely setting, even if it wasn’t as warm as we had hoped!
Thursday was a big day, with a phenomenal talk by Damani Dennisur to all removes and upper middles. He inspired some brilliant poetry from the boys, of which they should be very proud, and he even joined our readings in the Greek Theatre, and was struck by the talent and enthusiasm of our readers. Our own Mr Brogden took over Theory of Knowledge for the divisions with a brilliant talk that got everyone competing for the best literary knowledge, as well as encouraging some thoughtful reflection. Finally, Dr Ricks herself gave the fourth form a fascinating guided tour of her history in books, showing how our personal responses to literature can guide us throughout life. With some notable assistance from Zach, Henry and Rishul, who helped rehearse and perform a scene from Shakespeare’s Henry IV, part 1.
Many thanks to the team of Divisions pupils who put together many of the events for their CAS project- they made a real impact! All in all, many staff and pupils took part in Reading Week this year, and it was a huge success!
