Students seek to inspire through TEDx event

A group of 30 boys at King Edward’s School, Birmingham have organised their own TEDx event after being inspired by watching TED talks in their lessons.

The TEDxYouth@KES event, which took place on Saturday, 28 November 2020, featured an array of guest speakers from the school community including a current Year 9 pupil, a parent and a number of alumni.

Titled “The Future of Everything”, speakers delivered thought-provoking talks on a wide range of topics including the future of poetry, astrophysics and female empowerment.

Roxanne Irani, Head of Environmental Systems and Societies (ESS) and coordinator of TEDxYouth@KES, said: “The idea for the event stemmed from discussions I had with a few ESS Sixth Form students last year, after we had watched some inspiring TED talks in lessons. They were very keen to do something similar at KES and so we started to investigate how we could make it happen.

“After almost a year of planning, and having to change the format and plan multiple times due to Covid, we thoroughly enjoyed hosting the event and hope that everyone who took part enjoyed it too. Our talks now feature on the TED website and we hope they might inspire a whole new generation of speakers in time for our next event!”

TEDx is a programme of local, self-organised events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx programme, but individual TEDx events are self-organised.
