Year 4 Maths Challenge

a picture of two year 4 students doing a maths challenge

We have had a fantastic start to the year with the year 4 Maths Challenge, which has now been running for over a decade! We have held five heats, for close to 170 children, across the term for enthusiastic, and indeed talented, young mathematicians in Year 4 from nearly 50 primary schools across Birmingham and the West Midlands.

Working together to complete a crossnumber and compete in a fast-paced relay, the teams compete for bronze, silver and gold medals, with the victors returning in March for a final competition with the winners from the other heats. We have been really impressed with the talent, verve and determination displayed from all those involved.

The children thoroughly enjoyed taking part in a competitive Maths activity. It was run really well and was very organised. The children won their heat and came back to school really proud of their achievements.” Primary school teacher

From KES First XV to a pro contract with the Newport Dragons

Daniel has made an enormous contribution to school life at KES. A gifted all-rounder, he captained the First XV rugby team to the national finals at Twickenham, represented the school in water polo at national level, and took part in countless music concerts.

Pupils track the ISS with Astro Pi Mission

Having succeeded in the competition, we were then given the opportunity to partake in an online Q&A session with the ESA astronaut Luca Parmitano, which was a very interesting and useful experience, where we learned a lot about life as an astronaut, especially what it is really like to spend time on the ISS.
