A Classics Odyssey

It was truly amazing to be surrounded by such history, dating back millennia, built as a symbol of Athenian pride that still stands today.

At the start of the Easter holiday, we joined a group of 23 students and four staff from both KES and KEHS who met up at Birmingham Airport for a one-week trip around mainland Greece.

Over the course of the week, we visited many archaeological sites that were dotted all around Greece, such as the renowned wonder of the world, the Acropolis! Home to the famous Parthenon and other monumental temples. It was truly amazing to be surrounded by such history, dating back millennia, built as a symbol of Athenian pride that still stands today. The National Archaeological Museum was another, with its vast storage of collections that date from the prehistoric to late antiquity, sourced from all over Greece.

A highlight of the trip was Delphi. The site of the most famous ancient oracle. What would my prophecy have been if I had been given one? Most likely full of cats, many of which we met throughout Greece. This Odyssey of ours took up the entire incredible seven days, naturally with amazing hotels along the way. Of course, we couldn’t go all the way to Greece and not visit Olympia, which is the birthplace of the Ancient Olympic Games. We were even given the opportunity to race along the original track!

This is just a short summary, but there were many other incredible sites all over Greece! Overall, the trip has given all of us a wonderful insight into the fascinating heritage, profound understanding, and knowledge, and lasting impact of Ancient Greek civilisations, as well as a taste of modern culture in Greece from visiting an olive oil-making factory, where we did some Greek dancing, and a honey-producing farm!

Having succeeded in the competition, we were then given the opportunity to partake in an online Q&A session with the ESA astronaut Luca Parmitano, which was a very interesting and useful experience, where we learned a lot about life as an astronaut, especially what it is really like to spend time on the ISS.
