Two events were held last Friday at King Edward’s School and King Edward VI High School for Girls to the delight of young and old alike.
Year 10 to 13 boys from King Edward’s School ran their annual EDGE Festival, which saw 150 youngsters from five local primary schools arriving for an afternoon of fun activities.
Aimed at giving local Year 5 and 6 pupils the opportunity to have fun on a Friday afternoon and see what the School is like, the Year 13 King Edward’s boys discovered what it takes to design, plan and run a festival.
For the Year 10 and 11 boys manning the activities, which included sports and arts workshops, bungee runs and a giant assault course, it enabled them to work on their confidence, teamwork and communication skills.
Ed Jackson, Year 13 pupil and head of the leadership group, said: “The EDGE team have worked really hard over the last few months to plan this event and it’s great to see it all come together. The weather’s been fantastic and all the children have really enjoyed their day.”
Meanwhile the Year 13 girls from King Edward VI High School for Girls organised a Spring Party for the Elderly. Almost 40 elderly people from around the area attended the event, which included afternoon tea made by the girls, performances of classic songs from yesteryear, and even a round of bingo.
Year 13 pupil and party coordinator, Charlotte Orr, said: “The Spring party has been happening at the school for years and seems to be greatly appreciated by all that come.
“This year we had some repeat visitors, lots of thank you’s and a few cards. Many said they’d had a lovely time and hopefully we gave them an enjoyable afternoon with us which they can remember fondly.”
Both events were enjoyed by all that attended, and form part of the schools’ ethos of engaging with the local community.
