Junior Debating success

King Edward’s School’s top Junior Debating team has won through the Regional Round of the International Competition for Young Debaters to progress to the Finals Day, which will be held at the Oxford Union in April.

Despite adverse weather conditions threatening the trip in its entirety, all four of our teams made it to the Regional Round of the competition on Saturday, 17 March 2018. The Fourth Year team consisting of George Roberts and Jimmy Yuan performed exceptionally well, and will now go on to compete for the title.

Teacher of English and Junior Competitive Debating Coach Fiona Atay said: “I am incredibly proud of all four of our teams, especially since most of them hadn’t debated competitively before. They worked with huge enthusiasm and commitment to support one another. George and Jimmy’s success is so well deserved and should serve to inspire the younger Upper Middle teams for next year.”

Congratulations to all involved!

Tolkien Lecture: Cricket as Business, Culture and Entertainment

On Tuesday 28 April, the Ruddock Performing Arts Centre was the venue for the second Tolkien Lecture since the series resumed following its pause due to the pandemic. It was a pleasure to continue this much anticipated programme of talks, named in honour of one of the most distinguished alumni of King Edward’s School, J. R. R. Tolkien.
