KES Staff recreate photo for Movember

Movember has inspired staff at King Edward’s School to recreate a photo of their predecessors dating back to the early 1900s.

Throughout November staff and boys have been growing all manner of facial hair and participating in activities and assemblies designed to raise awareness of men’s health issues.

This culminated with a ‘Pay as you Mo’ day on Thursday, 30 November, when by donning both real and fake moustaches, pupils and staff raised more than £150 for the Movember Foundation.

Male colleagues also gathered in front of the school’s chapel to replicate a ‘tache-full’ 1906 photo of former King Edward’s staff.

During the month of awareness activities, pupils have learnt about prostate and testicular cancers as well as the importance of being open and honest about how they feel. The school also embarked upon a week of promoting form class exercise as a source of wellbeing.

Director of Outreach and Wellbeing, Deborah McMillan, said: “It is important as a boys’ school to recognise and support the only charity in the world dedicated to men’s health issues.

“Raising awareness of men’s cancers and addressing the potential for mental health problems arising from not knowing how to talk about difficulties is paramount in helping our boys to lead healthy lives.

“It has been a fun month of activities supported by the whole school community, and our recreation of a photo from 1906 was a fantastic way to recognise the efforts of our hairy male teachers.”
