Hello to everyone reading this week’s edition of my ‘Thought of the Week’. Over this past week, my main focus has been on creating (with the help of the other student editors) the King Edward’s School, Birmingham 2020 Leavers’ Yearbook.
The main feature, I would say, of the Yearbook is the Pen Portrait section, where traditionally two students pair up, and are tasked to write around 400 words to sum up their relationship and their friend’s time at KES. This is a pretty unique feature of our Yearbook, as opposed to the commonly seen American theme of portrait pictures of students with a quote underneath. Consequently, this has placed me in the convenient position where, prior to the publication of the 2020 Yearbook, only my team of editors and I can read what every student has to say about their friends, I can learn more about my peers that I was not as familiar with, and also can just laugh at and relive all of our highlights during our time at KES. I don’t want this to sound like an advertisement for the school that is going to be used as propaganda for prospective students and their parents, but it truly reaffirmed for me the fortunate position I have been in the past seven years, to attend a school like King Edward’s with the amazing group of lads in my year, that I am sure will go on to achieve great success.
Furthermore, reading all of the reports regarding sports, school trips, Friday Afternoons and the infamous ‘Most Likely to…’ section (more effort went into this particular section by the entire year group than revising for our mocks earlier in the year!) has unlocked so many memories that were residing in some hidden corner of my mind, and I am grateful that those memories were triggered again. I have no doubt that when the Yearbook is finally published (though with Covid-19 the actual date is still a bit of a mystery), my year group will deeply enjoy reading through it just as much as I have, and will hopefully look back with great positivity to the past seven years.
